Sea Change

Hey people. I spent the weekend working on Tina, with a little break Sat morning helping out at the trail that is to be her home. This weekend it was all about the butt people-- Tina's butt, anyway.

I spent Sat afternoon working on her right thigh and working my way around to her backside. It's challenging because I have to keep shifting my thinking from 2D to 3D. In the frame-out process it's pretty easy. I kind of see whatever it is in 3D before I even start, so it's just a matter of caging that image.

But with this new method of covering the entire frame with steel, it's a bit of a trick figuring out how to take the flat pieces of steel and mold them to the shape. They aren't elastic, can't stretch. They generally only want to curve one direction, so if you think of someone's leg, which is roughly cylindrical, and how it attaches to their body at the butt-- that curve, you begin to see that people curve all kinds of ways.

To avoid a stove-pipey, robot appearance you have to cut all kinds of triangles and odd shapes you can work multi-directional curves and slight twists into. Since I'm doing all the bending by hand, usually just using a couple pairs of pliers and sometimes my trusty blue hammer, it's tricky-- and slow.

When I looked at her at the end of the day Sat it was a big disappointment because her butt was a little draggy. She had a little too much junk back there and I knew Sun the first part of the day would be spent cutting apart all the work I'd so meticulously done the day before.

It was worth it though. My working mantra is "I'm not going to all this trouble to have it turn out 'okay,'" -- or some version of-- if you're going to put in any effort, you're already buying in, so why not go for it? You might as well give it your all. That way, you have a shot at creating something really awesome-- special.

I'm going through another phase where my base metals are reconfiguring somehow. Every once in a while I have a major shift. I used to fight it, but now think it's just part of my journey and roll with it, as much as I can, and trust it'll lead me where ever I need to go.

The last time it happened was a couple years ago. I felt like a capped fire hydrant all the time. I needed to listen to music constantly. My earphones were like an umbilical cord, filling my ears with raw, heavy rock that felt like it was helping me vent off some of the steam.

I wrote constantly, and the theater in my brain ran movies every waking moment. It was so overpowering it sometimes made it hard to hang out with actual humans because I'd be distracted by the fictional characters in my head. I felt like my life would be totally pointless if I never got published.

Now something's changing again. I seem to have figured out how to manage the energy surges, which are less intense. Mountain biking, even just thinking about it or watching it, seems to have replaced the need for non-stop rock and that wild, hyper feeling (most of the time), and the writing? It's different.

I've detached from it, and that feels scary because I worry about not being able to "get back" to wonderland, but also important, like I can get perspective. I've written enough and read enough over the last couple of years to realize good writers are sort of a dime a dozen. The real trick is finding a story that holds up structurally-- and is different enough from everything else out there to feel fresh, and so needs to be told it's clawing its way out of you-- unstoppable.

Right now I have no such story, so am concentrating on my visual art, both technically and energetically, and letting things ferment, and reading as much as I can. I'm going to start listening to books on tape again too, after almost two years of taking a break from that and just jamming-out while I weld.

I'm monitoring my always fluctuating energy, and waiting to see what will happen next.

Life is pretty amazing isn't it?

Weird Effing Wed- creepy dolls & pseudoprofanity edition

Hey people. Buckle-up is all I can say today. If you are new or squeamish, this post might be a bit much for you. You've been warned. For the rest of you freaks-- here are your creepy dolls. ~tosses at the internets~

Yes-- I'm freaking terrified here. Who wouldn't be of antebellum debutante zombie doll with her motorcycle-ride hairdo. If you look close her little hands are reaching and grasping, ready to entangle themselves in hair, clothing, whatever she can grab. Run!

Yeah, here we go. This appears to be some kind of human trafficking container that has busted open to reveal either Pocahontas, or some woman nabbed from a mountain bike race, Bigfoot, some poor thing who has just given birth to E.T., a giant Edith Bunker, and a fembot.

Is it just me or are there shades of Twilight here? Some super pale boy in clothes from another century looking on, (probably seething with murderous rage), as "Bella", (apparently down from another swoon-fest), is ravaged by a delighted were-skunk, while his pack of were-Cavalier King Charles Spaniels looks on disapprovingly.

Raggedy Andy and his mail order bride. Local women proved too uppity for him, and, you know, thought he was hideous, so he paid $10k for Svetlana. She can't believe her good fortune. Now she is able to live in America-- Land of milk and honey, and clean this guy's house and do his laundry-- and him, and maybe get a part time job at a fast food restaurant someday! (This is almost a true story you guys... That's all I can say about that.)

One clown is crying and the other is screaming in terror as the Easter Bunny pulls his hair & lays the hammer down. First rule of the Easter Bunny's all clown fight club-- You DO NOT talk about Easter Bunny's all clown fight club.

Okay peeps. The rest of this post is probably going to be salted liberally with pseudo & actual profanity, so, if that bothers you, now would be a good time to tune out. Bottom line is I have to make a shit-load more of the effing, effing, S.O.B-ing- Imeanbeeyoutiful trees.

Look at these gorgeous m-effers. I know. I like them too. But I tell you I am SICK TO DEATH of making them!

Yes, it is at my discretion. I could just say, "Nope, sorry-- I'm out," like I have other years. But here's the thing. They sell really well, and times are not just hard for artists (and, er... everyone else) right now, but also for gallery owners. They could make some sure $ off these, and I could use it too, even if I'm only making about half through them, so I feel like I need to suck it up and make about 4 effing dozen more!

The thought sickens me. I was so planning to be "off" by now, spending long hours writing and revising, and screwing off. So far that hasn't happened. I've had a couple days off (literally, like, 2) but otherwise have been still working on art stuff all month. Now that I figured out last night I have to go into full-on tree mode again-- I'm pissed and stressed. I could only sleep for about 5 hours because I kept doing the math in my head-- "Seriously-- I have to make how many??" My wrath, is totally fucking incurred man.

I'm so sick of tasting metal dust in my throat, and soot settling in all my pours and etching the lines on my face-- speaking of-- lines on my face? That is a fucking OUTRAGE too. I only feel, like, fifteen or 30 (depending on the day). I look in the mirror and it's like-- "gasp-- who the eff is that?" I'm tired of my hands hurting and the plates of my skull grinding together when my helmet gets heavy, and coughing all the time and my windpipe getting pasted shut, and my eyes burning.

I'm going to take tomorrow off for some retail therapy, then hit it again straight through until Thanksgiving and hope I can get them all done in one mass session. (which would be a new record to say the least)

Tomorrow I'm going to IKEA, land of all things cool and cheap and seductive for the home, and the Mall Of America-- land of everything, including Auntie Anne's Cinnamon pretzel sticks.

If I find some hot-ass velvet pants or cords in a color I can't resist it could be ON. If I find a cool military/"I'm with the band" black jacket to go with my new fuck-yeah equestrian-ish boots it could so be on. But it probably won't be.

Remember the fierce coat I super wanted (above)? Couldn't bring myself to do it. The purple cords I super wanted? I couldn't pull the trigger until they were on sale for $12 at H&M and came with a free sweater.

This "spree" will probably end much like my annual state fair pig-out mission, where I go there with every intention of completely debasing myself and having to be carted out in a wheelbarrow, only to eat a walleye sandwich and half and order of cheese curds before wussing-out.

I just do not have it in me to be a total spend-thirft gross American consumer, but I'm going to skip-out tomorrow, and not do a lick of work, and consider buying a bunch of shit I don't need, and try to feel all decadent.

Is it really nine in the afternoon? What friggin' DAY is it? (blinks)

Hey people. The Beatles entire catalog was re-released this month-- cleaned-up digitally remastered shiny new versions. I've been listening to some of their stuff while working this week and it really holds up. No duh right? It's the effing Beatles! But seriously, when you start listening to their stuff, it's not only the sheer volume of music-- which is staggering. It's that their songs are just so damned GOOD.

It got me thinking about how many artists they've influenced. TONS I'm sure. What an amazing legacy. Enjoy "Nine in the afternoon" By panic at the disco. If you don't detect a Beatles influence here- you need a refresher course.

In other SueNews:

I've been working double shifts getting ready for my show in (gulp) less than two weeks-- well, I have to deliver in less than 2 weeks. I really barely know what freaking day it is. They have all melded into one endless uber day of welding and cutting. And then more welding.

I'm super stressed and having freaky dreams. Last night the classic-- "No- you're supposed to deliver everything TODAY!" dream. Yipes. So. Not. Ready. Also a really random one about getting in a huge screaming match with an Arby's manager because my sister started eating her giant roast beef sandwich before we got done paying. (For some reason she was kind of street urchin-y and it was up to me to keep her fed-- the whole family actually.) She was on that sandwich like a grizzly bear and I was like, "HEY--SHE'S HUNGRY A-HOLE!" (then a bunch of death threats etc.) This was esp weird because I have never in my life eaten at Arby's, and neither me or sis eat meat. Also I would probably not ever do that. Probably. Unless the person was a really big jerk. Or trying to take away my sister's sandwich.

To top it off, the last 3 nights, just as I'm going to sleep-- swear to God-- a giant gun blast goes off right next to my head (obvs this is not Dan actually discharging rounds right there in the bedroom, but it sounds totally real and SUPER loud) and I jump like, a mile and am then wide awake for at least another half hour. WTH subconscious?

Today my pals are getting to go play and I have to stay home and work (I know, hands you a tissue to wipe away single tear). I was supposed to go to the Junk Bonanza with them. We planned it for literally months. Last year I got my rockin' fringe jacket there. But, work man. (sniff)

Tell me your freaky dreams and tales of woe. Commiserate yo.

Let's Get The Flock Out Of Here!

Fat bodied birds you make my rockin' world go 'round. Garden birds are now pwn'd. Cute huh?

I like 'em. I'm thinking $20. Try finding anything decent at an art show for $20. Recession pricing people. I always try to have one or two really inexpensive items at this show. Power to the people baby.

Some of you are into the weldy details, so I'll tell you-- to weld this paper thin stuff you have to break every rule. The glob of molten steel you usually DON'T want on the end of your gun replaces the material that burns away the second you contact it, and you have to back off as you weld. You have to hold the gun way off, like an inch away, and pull back as you finish.

No matter what you won't get the prettiest welds on this super thin rusty steel, but-- that's wut I'm talkin' 'bout. That is pretty darn pwn'd. (You can click to zoom)

This might be the last snow of the year. Everyone is sick to death of winter by now, but it was pretty this morning. No denying it.

In other SueNews: Today is me and Dan's other anniversary-- You probably remember this post from last Oct, but we did live together for about 10 years before taking the plunge. So today is our original anniversary that marks the giant make-out session that began our "You are not the boss of me" (eye roll) (sigh) "I know." (secretly thinks they are the total boss) relationship.

For a quick review, with over half of relationships failing, what is the secret to staying a power pair for 25 years? Here's what we think (yes, I actually asked Dan, so some of these are his answers.)

1) Pick right in the first place. It's not going to work unless both people's idea of what they want their life to look like matches up.

2) Mostly it's a firm decision you make in your mind. When the escape clause is off the table, stuff HAS to be worked out. You have to be in it to win it.

3) Be the other person's safe place. No betrayals-- ever. No belittling their dreams. No looking for every little thing "wrong".

4) Laugh and goof around as much as possible. Life is supposed to be fun.

5) Get a life. The other person isn't there to complete you-- that's your job. You share the lives you have. Stay plugged in.

6) Look around every once in a while and appreciate how sweet you have it. No matter what's going on there is always some stuff to feel lucky about-- notice that stuff. Don't dwell on all the stuff that's not ideal.

It was fun talking about this with Dan because he's not a huge introspection guy. We continue to be mostly on the same page. I picked good.

Production Fail -- Art Win?

Slag. The bane of my existence. OK, famine and a few other things suck too, but slag is right up there. That little pile of stuff on the corner of my bench-- that's what it looks like after I knock it off with my what?--- That's right people, my slag hammer.

That's what it looks like-- so suck it pervs who keep hitting my blog by searching "slags doing this and that". (You know who you are London, Ireland, Norway... Norway, really, kind of surprised/disappointed in you.)

My goal of finishing all 8 herons by lunch today was a total joke. I really was working hard and fast all day, but only finished 3 & 1/2. Even with all the major components prep'd they're just taking a while. They keep getting more and more elaborate, and all have to be individuals of course.

They're becoming super-heroic. I keep imagining them harboring secret fantasies of daring do. Could be projecting. Hmmm...

In other SueNews: yeah right, like there is any. Running is going awesome. Tibia cooperating.

Not A Psycho Killer-- Yay!

Not only is BikeStoreGuy Brian not a psycho killer, he's actually a really cool guy and came through for me BIG TIME. Check out the haul!

Not only did he give me all these goodies and then some, when I told him I was thinking about making some kind of cart to wheel one end of my kayak (because I'm too wimpy to just hoist it over my head and carry it around) he goes, "Hmm, come back to my shed with me." My pal Jamie whispers, "This is the part where he's going to kill us..." (Yes, I brought a buddy, just in case.) -- But no! No killing involved! He rummages around and pulls out this awesome cart he once made exactly for that purpose and he just GAVE it to me.

This guy is so cool. He's got a whole garage full of bikes: one really weird extra long one he made to carry a whole bunch of stuff, even his kayak, a pug, numerous fixed gears (?) (single speeds), -- seriously, like a dozen bikes. He also had a pretty bad-ass looking little speedy boat and a motorcycle, but he has no car, and no computer. Since there is 0% chance he'll see this I'll tell you-- he's cute too yo, and single. If you think you can keep up with him, throw your bike in front of a car and bring it to the Coon Rapids Eric's and ask for Brian. ;D

So anyway, it was nice to have my "most-people-are-actually-pretty-cool-if-you-give-them-half-a-chance" theory play out once again. He seemed to really like the bike gear necklace I made for him as a thank you, but I might owe him some more art for that kayak cart...

Speaking of art, here's a heron. I want to make 8 for the show. I have a commission waiting for an order of 5, so I'll either sell them all (that would be just fine) or be that much ahead on my commission.

I have got to spank the hell out of it for the next 9 days. I'm not sure how many of you are old enough to have had stuff start breaking on you yet, but take it from me-- it's a total frickin' outrage! My back is starting to not like all the hours in the shop, and the joint that connects my thumb to my hand isn't too happy either.

I need to get some more runs in for my back. Major extension = Goood. The thumb, well, I need to start using my Vicegrips instead of my vice-like grip. Tomorrow I'm running no matter if it's raining or what-- this weather is incurring my wrath, and trying to make me fat, and giving me Russell Brand hair, which is not as cool on a chick. That is all.

Tick Tick TOCK

Hey People. The clock is ticking big time now. Less than 2 weeks until the show and-- gasp!-- there is no friggin' way I'll get everything done I want to. But I never ever do, and if the deadline was in two months the same exact sitch would develop because I always keep tacking on a bunch of other things i want to try to get done right up until loading time. I have never loaded a show with completely cooled welds yet. Oh wells.

Meanwhile-- Dude Hand pwn'd. As you can see by these pretend hands, dudes just have more meat on their palms and their hands are a little bigger. All better now.

So here she is. I have to say I'm super into her.
(You can click for better view.)

Thinking about making some individual oak leaves for an inexpensive take away.
(?)

This weekend was a recovering from double shifts weekend. The cats were like-- "She's in the house and there's no computer on her lap-- swarm!" And Dan was happy to get some attention too. He'd kind of become an occasional murmuring Charlie Brown's teacher's voice in the background. I'd be typing away furiously and suddenly realize-- "Oh, crap-- he's been talking to me." So there was much hang-y out-y time to make up for.

I thought I was over my giant stoner vision from my double shift phase, but going out into the world amid the general population today cured me of that notion. I dropped my bike off at the shop to have them check out my 'puter, didn't leave them the actual puter though, missed turns (not like me), forgot tons of shit I was supposed to bring, do, etc, and seriously-- like four times today I was like, "Oh shit-- this is the exit-- oh well." The last time I just went with it and was like, "I'm going out the in (in that ha ha-ha-ha ha sing song voice), then "right in front of a co-o-op...". (And I'm usually aces on the driving thing, srsly.)

Welding mojo is back I'm happy to report. Maybe some heron pics tomorrow.
I also successfully tracked down a BSG (BikeStoreGuy) from one of the Eric's I hit today who has a bunch of junked gear assemblies he's going to give me tomorrow. I have to go get them at his place so hopefully he's not a bike fixer and psycho killer. You'll just have to stay tuned to see what I do with those goodies. Later.

Dude Hand

Hey people. Welcome to Fav Music Friday. Today's pic is totally unrepentant pop. Check out Beyonce` in "Single Ladies", a fun super produced number and object lesson in how people are constructed btw. Lot's of movement. One thing I've always really like about Beyonce` is how comfortable she is in her skin. She's always been considered beautiful, but girl has some drummies on her. She's not as emaciated as we tend to like our girl icons. She's strong, healthy, and gorgeously owning it. Enjoy-- but then scroll down.

OK-- This is the real reason I veered off my usual rock road today. This is a little long, but watch the first minute-and-a-half if you can. These girls crack me up. I'd dork-out with them anytime. When mah seestah was here after Christmas the only things that prevented a gold pants version of this happening was little kids hanging off of us and me getting sick. In retrospect-- Thank you Jaden and Megan-- from the general public.

In other SueNews-- Today I'm more coherent, but yesterday was a total friggin' waste. Everything took forever because I had giant StonerVision all day and kept staring off into space and forgetting what I was doing, plus, all my bendy-weldy mojo was diminished. It took practically all damn day to make one hand. Hands can be really expressive and the raven has now taken on some heavy symbolism to me so I want to get that hand just right. Jez is kind of half welcoming it half protecting it. I got the gesture down, but she has dude hand-- too big, not acceptable. Eff. Eff. Eff.

Oh Wells. Today is hand pwnation day, and I have to go to the steel yard. Later peeps.

Boob Job

Last night I went to bed before midnight for the first time all week and cra-hashed. Slept for 9 hours straight. Today I'm giving myself a recovery day-- half day of welding, little light run, vegging out-tonight.

Kind of felt like the sistah-hood took a hit on this one, but I gave Jez a boob job yesterday. It was just with her placid expression, small frame, and pretty meh chestal region she was beginning to look a little Asian, (art-wise). I needed to take her a little more brick house. So, check out the new girls. Not gross, not porno big, just, biggER.

And Sunday I got the river on her. I'm psyched about the leaves now, and had another idea of adding a raven. I have a thing for ravens. They're cool, smart, live super long, and mate for life. In my story when Jez bites it she calls ravens down to scavenge her remains so she can become part of the natural world again. This is probably weird and freaky, but to me it's kind of cool. Anyway, I think she's going to get a raven on her right shoulder.

Sat morning I delivered that birch commission to the VeryNiceUnitarianWisconsinites. These guys waited two years almost. Talk about being a loser on deadlines (but I did have some unexpected shop-not-getting-built-in-time, back-going-out, leg-bone-cracking complications). These guys are super cool, and really support art and artists. It was fun seeing them again and visiting other artwork they've bought from me over the years. Karen made these awesome cinnamon rolls for us--yum!

They insisted I pose by it too, so here's my Vana White impersonation.

On the way to their place we passed another of the many "humiliating episodes from Sue's life" historical sites scattered around the TC area. Maybe someday there'll be some kind of a tour with markers and wayside rests and everything...

Back in the day I always drove crap cars around. The fuel pump on my ancient Pontiac Sunbird went out on 694. This car became know as the "Daisy Duke Mobile" because eventually the doors broke too and I had to crawl in and out the window. Amazingly I got good enough at this that I could even do it in a skirt and maintain my cool. (Just let me keep thinking that okay?)

So I'm on 694, stranded (pre cell days), and start walking. There are tons of cars beeping at me because I was like, 20 & had really long hair, & am a girl. I was wearing my usual-- black tee shirt, and my baggy red and black plaid shorts (and of course loads of black eyeliner). This was about as punk-ass an outfit as my employer back then would let me get away with.

I decided the exit was too far down. Naturally undeterred by a six foot chain link fence, I climb on up. Cars are still beeping and stuff and I want to get off the road asap. When I climb over the top, my shorts catch on the chain link, but I don't notice in time, so when I go to jump down I become stuck in mid air. I'm now hanging, by my shorts, six feet off the ground next to a busy freeway at rush hour. I kicked at the fence and flailed around until they finally ripped and I fell down, tumbling into the weedy ditch.

Thank god this was pre-cells, pre-youtube.

Tonight I'm putting a blue streak in my hair, and not doing another damn thing. Later.

Eye Candy

OK, It took me all morning to cut apart and re do yesterday's mess, but this is more like it. The clothes throw me. I get how bodies are constructed but when you start putting a bunch of clothes on them and it's all just in my head with nothing to look at I get messed up-- not that I go around picturing people naked all the time or anything-- much.

In my head and in the story Jezebel wears 1850's high buck hooker gear, bastardized with native american influences she picked up living with the Fox tribe. I can't make layers of lace and gauzy stuff etc out of steel. She also wears a gun and has a huge hole blown through her chest but, y'know, probably a bit of a stretch for the art crowd. So this is Jez, and not. I'm taking her more woodland spirit. So what IS she wearing-- what's she made of?

To me she's made of her environment-- the forest and the river. I'm going to cover her whole outfit with leaves and water.

This steel is so gorgeous. It's one of my very favorite parts of my job, but i can only do it on the summer now because I have to lay the steel out and get paint all over, plus, I use a hose to mist the paint. I do layers of paint and rust-- white vinegar usually for that, more paint, mist, vinegar, paint. I use metallic paints and the rusting oxidizes whatever they use for the sparkle in the paint. I love how it looks. I always hate to cut it up, but it will make awesome river water.

Here's some leaves. After seeing how that birch commission came out I really like stems on the leaves. It makes them look more lacy.

As far as writery stuff, was up super late last night and it's going to be another late one tonight. I'll probably see where I am about midnight and if there's no hope of finishing I'll -- reschedule my submission date (I just typed "give up" about four times and deleted it-- crap, I HATE missing deadlines). It's not like this was even an actual deadline. I'm the one who said "I'll probably have it for you in a couple weeks", but I feel like now I look unreliable. I guess as long as it's effing kick ass awesome when I turn it in. That's what's important.

OK, this doesn't count as "work", so, better get at it. Stay cool.

EDIT TO ADD;
Eff, Eff, Eff. It's 11:30 and I can tell by what I've got left it is not going to happen tonight-- plus, I'm so tired I've entered the suck zone. When you start throwing shit, using tons of profanity, and not just for fun, and/or stop being picky-- time for a break. Bed yo. In the morning I have an early ski date, then may pwn this effer (the manuscript) just so I can at least feed it to willing betas on my deadline day. Stay tuned-- I know-- this is totally riveting!!!! (meh)

Jezebel Birdsong

OK. It's 2 "A" dot fricking "M" people. I'm 35,000 words in on my revision and the manuscript is up to 78,000 total now and counting. Think I can finish by Fri?? D'ya think???? The good news is most of the end doesn't need any work, it's just getting through this middle part.

As far as weldy stuff goes-- "They call me Hell, they call me Staceeeeeeey...That's not my name." This is Jezebel Birdsong-- one of my characters, a ghost. This is with just the warpaint.

Now with her bandit mask she's starting to look a little wrestle-mania.

OK, now we're talking. Now I'm really feelin' her. I think she's surpassed my lame drawing-- thank God!

Stuff coworkers would have endured today-- frequent air guitar breaks using whatever was handy, usually the welding gun, head whipping episodes resembling seizures-- or maybe me being shaken like a ragdoll by an invisible giant, me stomping around singing "I am the greatest man that ever lived" (yeah I said it) super loud, and "Monkey Wrench" and busting out my awesome terrible dance moves.

In truth none of that would have occurred if I had coworkers because I would have felt too stupid to totally rock-out in front of them. Instead I would have, with great effort, restrained myself, and tried to mentally block them out, and been mad at them for unwittingly oppressing me and my rockingness. --- Or, more likely, I would have tried to corrupt them into being all goofy with me and no work would have gotten done.

See? I'm way better off on my own.

Getting there. Shoulders and arms are still off.
Hopefully tomorrow will be a pwnfest.

Butter Face

Hey peeps. Blew another glove today.

Here's the fix. Creepily I'm the Ed Gein of gloves.

My drawings aren't always very good, but they give me the idea. It's not so much that I'm trying to make the sculpture look like the sketch, as it is a way of helping me work it out in my head. It's kind of like my inability to talk tech-- I know what I mean, I just can't tell you.

So anyway, this is a character from my novel. She's a ghost, and probably looks weird to everyone but me, but I think she's pretty rockin' (in my head at least). Picture a good looking black woman wearing a headdress with a bunch of weird trinkets hanging from it, and antlers sticking out of the top, wearing war paint and a bandit mask. Yes, my head is a scary amazing place at times. What can I say? In my head she's way hotter than this lame drawing, but, like I said, it just helps me work it out.
When I do people I now start with the face. I can do bodies no problem-- my main flaw being a tendency to make everyone vaguely super-heroic, at least the naked ones. But with people they really need a good face. It doesn't matter how cool you make the body- positioning, idea, whatever-- if when you're all done it has butter face. (nice-- but-her-face...)

I doubt I could make a face look like an actual person at this stage of the game, like "do a sculpture of my sister" etc, but I can usually make the people in my head. So far so good. For women you basically want symmetry, high cheekbones, big eyes but not Disney big, then other stuff like ethnicity comes into play.

This was a whole 8 hour day-- no lunch (and those who know me know how crabby I am by now) but I did get her face all done today. I got eyes on her too, just didn't shoot it (no pic).

OK, second shift begins now. The manuscript is a scary, scary mess. I have highlighting all over the place and have cut out 6 chapters-- about 12,000 words, and am busily rewriting the remaining 73,000 words. It should weigh in at around 75 - 80 when I'm done.

When I hit the wall I'm going to hit hard, and it better be after my show! -- Oh, thought I was done. This is basically me being weird. I wanted to see if I had the scale about right and if where I was planning on putting the eyes would work. I'm actually this blurry today. Not a camera thing. : ) Ok-- writey time!

Bring It.

Hey people. After hearing from AgentCoolAssChicka last week I went into proof-reading-like-a-mofo mode. It’s all I did between approx 7:30 p.m. Thurs. and 7:00 p.m. Fri. besides sleep a little. After sending my 85k word baby out into to world attached to emails saying variously, “I don’t expect you to get through this in 2 weeks, but I’ll take whatever feedback you can offer in that time frame” and “try not to make me suicidal” I promptly fell into a Girl Scout Cookie coma.

An online writery type pal (you know who you are O Evil One) posted a link about Samoas Fri and I became obsessed. They had to be obtained, and, in my fragile state, had to be consumed—all at once. I know, my AssFat almost laughed itself off. Can you say running like a mofo this week?

Now AgentCoolAssChicka is twitting about her 575 unread queries, and her 175 files of unread material and I once again feel like a needle in a haystack I haven’t even jumped into yet. Insecurity—it’s a bitch yo.

While I was finishing my little horse today I was thinking about how slim my chances at publication are, and how much time I was taking on such a small, probably not very expensive sculpture. A smart friend was observing the other day how this economy will weed out weaker businesses. Publishing people are talking all the time now about how no one’s buying anything, and people are getting laid off left and right. Art sales are down too.

I was more determined than ever to make the little horse as awesome as I could, no matter how long it took-- and I will keep ramming my head into the publication brick wall until either I get through, or my head is reduced to some kind of gross meat knob that will completely rule out future book jacket photos.

If you’re a creative pro, now isn’t the time to quit striving for extraordinary. Maybe only really special things will make it through the marketplace’s filter right now. Does that mean some crap won’t also get through, or, sadly, even some extraordinary things will be overlooked? No—But I for one am bringing my creative A-game.

If I wind-up never having anything else to show for it, I’ll be able to hold me head up knowing I didn’t quit, and I didn’t lame-out.

Have a good day people. Now-- caffeine, shaking it vigorously, welding a bit, running like a mofo, and more welding. Then, maybe skiing. But caffeine immediately-- stat! (blinks blearily)

Horsing Around

Hey people, I've officially become "the man" (as in workin' fo). My new shop is so pleasant though. I feel so lucky to be able to do something I love in my own way. Independence has always been my primary driver (alongside creativity).

Yesterday I started the little horse that's been in my head a while. I actually dreamed about it a while ago. That happens sometimes-- I dream about a sculpture or sometimes even words. I'll wake up and be like, "vociferous huh, I think that's an actual word." Then I'll go look it up and work it in somewhere.

It's probably hard to see what this is, I don't know. (you can click the pic for a bigger view) It's easy for me to see the parts that aren't done yet as simply fill-in-the-blank sections that I just have to keep putting steel around. Not surprisingly, this little horse is behaving badly, getting ready to kick. I like depicting the two sides of horses as I see them. All they really want to do is relax- stand around and eat, but we put them to work, make them wear a bunch of equipment, do what we say, carry us around. They have ways of rebelling, showing attitude. Stay tuned.

Stuff like spending two half-days on a little horse I won't be able to sell for much is one reason I'll probably always only be a thousandaire. I don't care though. I have to make what I want. I'm having so much fun with this one he may get a few friends.

The first part of my day yesterday, before starting the horse, was spent at the local auto body shop digging through their scrap dumpster. Score! Two hoods in nice colors for tag necklaces and who knows what else. I could see a blue dog... The people there were really cool so it's a good lead for more free steel in the future. I'll probably start working with this today. Once I see how it cuts and how thick the steel is it may give me other ideas.

One thing about my job-- bad hair day? maybe just a poorly-drawn-head day? No problem! First of all, I have no coworkers, so no one sees me-- in fact, if anyone did see me, I'd pretty much look like a storm trooper anyway.

It's felt really good getting back to welding. It's so totally different than writing (although I love that too and am still at it). The whole coming up with ideas part is similar, but the actual welding is miles apart. I just crank the tunes (and since I'm in the middle of the woods where no one can see or hear, jam out unrepentantly) and use my tools.

I'm not mechanical in the same way guys are. I'm not good at talking about it or understanding it on that technical level (as you may have gathered from the SuckWOW posts). I've been around other welders and when they talk about amps and volts etc and all the technical aspects of it I kind of blank out even though I've been through welding school and had to force myself to "get it" at one point. That's not my preferred way of thinking. When I'm alone with my stuff, I just know.

I know exactly what I'm doing, how fast to move, or slow, what angle to hold my arm at, how stuff is supposed to sound. This is one of those things no one will probably get but me but my favorite types of welds are the really tricky ones where something doesn't quite meet up and you have to bridge a gap or fill a hole without burning the material away.

I just know how the steel acts, and it feels good to feel proficient and use that part of my brain.
